GOLD CITY BASSMASTERS

2006 Youth Tournament

On August 5, 2006 the Gold City Bassmasters fishing club, anchored in Villa Rica, Ga., held their 7th annual kids fishing tournament. This year’s tournament was held at a private lake in Carroll County. Getting an early start to take advantage of the cooler morning temperatures was a must.

Club members had just completed assembling and rigging the new fishing gear when the bus load of children arrived for a morning of fellowship, fun, fishing, and a cook out. After their arrival, the club chaplain, Terry Turner, delivered an opening prayer and a short devotional. The kids were then dismissed to begin their fishing adventure.

There were more than 40 children who participated, ranging in age from two to fourteen. While several of the kids had never fished before, others claimed to have years of fishing experience under their belts telling of some quite enviable catches. The morning’s bait of choice was live meal worms fished under a red and black bobber. The club members were kept busy giving casting lessons, sharing the how-to of baiting a hook and fish-kissing, and generally untangling crossed and misguided lines.

As fish were caught, weighed, photographed, and released you could hear many fish tales beginning taking shape. After a few of hours fishing, a great meal of hot dogs and hamburgers, hot off the grill, along with chips, cookies, and ice cold drinks were served. It was then back to the water for more fishing excitement.

As in previous events, each boy and girl who participated received a new Zebco 202 rod and reel to use and to take home at the end of the day. Fish caught included largemouth bass, bream, and catfish, and most every child got to enjoy the excitement of fighting and landing fish. Trophies were awarded for the biggest fish for each of three age groups. Tee-shirts and trophies were also given to each child who participated.

The purpose of our club is to enjoy, promote, and expand the sport of fishing to our membership and to the community in general. By engaging children in these annual events it is our desire to share the love of God with them and also, in some way, let them experience something which may potentially be a positive draw for them when they grow older.

Gold City Bassmasters would like to thank the following for their support of this great event: Royal Metal Products and their employees, ALPHA Umpire Association, John Shear, Gene Roberson, Fullerville Baptist church, and a special thanks to Roger Aldridge for his gracious hospitality - and to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for a beautiful and safe day.
